The organization started as a program funded by Family Services (now Centers for Children & Families) and became an independent agency in 1981. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midland is a United Way of Midland Program Provider and services are offered on a year-round basis.

BBBS’ mission is to create and support caring relationships that improve the lives of children. The majority of children impacted through the year-round services have experienced divorce or separation in their homes, or the loss of a parent through death or incarceration. BBBS provides one-to-one mentors (“Big”) to children (“Littles”) through the traditional Community-Based Program and the School-Based Program (a site-based partnership with Midland Independent School District). Commonly referred to the professionally supported, one-to-one pairings as “matches”.

TODAY’S TIP:

CAREER:

· Get all your agreements in writing.

· Timing is everything when you ask for a concession.

· Everything in life is open to negotiation because everyone has something they can give you.

· Quality assurance is a  part of marketing – you can’t brand something that is inconsistent.

· Know when to follow rules and when to use your own judgment.

IMAGE MANAGEMENT:

What is professional?

You might say “dark suit and tie” or perhaps “looking confident”.  There can be no one answer, only solid guidelines.  Every situation is different, as is every person and their approach.  What is certain, however, is that:  Professional = Being Appropriate.

What makes something “appropriate”?

You audience and their expectations; the situation and the environment; your objectives and your industry.
